A Bumpy Road to Recovery: My Unexpected Post-Microdiscectomy Experience
May 8th, 2023
Surgery day, and a strange mixture of dread and hope fluttered in my chest. The procedure, a microdiscectomy, was scheduled early. The operation went smoothly, and I was discharged on the same day, armed with post-operative instructions, a prescription for pain management, and a cautious sense of optimism.

These first days at home were a delicate dance between managing discomfort and celebrating small victories. With each passing hour, the incision pain lessened slightly, hinting at the potential for future relief. Yet, my body was clearly still in recovery mode, and the effects of the surgery demanded respect and patience.

Well into the evening, I was abruptly awoken by my son. Groggy and disoriented, I registered his concern – he insisted I needed to take my temperature. The reading was alarming: 102.2°F. The simple act of sitting up was labored, my chest was aching, and each breath felt like a monumental task. Following his prompt, I called the tele-nurse who, given my symptoms, urged me to go to the ER.
At the hospital, I was swiftly escorted to a bay bed. IV lines found their way into my veins, and blood was drawn for testing. The minutes ticked by agonizingly slowly, each second filled with trepidation. Then, finally, the news came.
The good news? No infection at the surgical site and no sepsis. A weight lifted off my shoulders. But the relief was short-lived as the shocking news followed: I had developed bilateral pulmonary embolisms. I had acquired a serious condition, a known, albeit rare, risk after surgery.
My hospital stay extended over the next two days. I was put on oxygen, given Lovenox and Coumadin, and endured constant finger pricks. Food lost its appeal, and I shed over ten pounds. It was a scary detour on my road to recovery, one that reminded me of the vulnerability and strength intertwined in our bodies.

I was released from the hospital, just in time for Mother’s Day. It was a bittersweet celebration, tinged with the lingering effects of my recent health scare but sweetened by the love of my family and the relief of being home.
Now, as I write this on May 17th, I am still recovering. My journey through microdiscectomy took an unexpected turn, highlighting the unpredictability of our bodies’ responses and the importance of post-operative vigilance. Yet, despite the hurdles, I remain hopeful, reassured by the incremental progress each new day brings. Here is the strength we discover in ourselves during challenging times, the resilience that propels us forward, and the health we strive for, one day at a time.
